Charles Swanson

Bio

Charles (Chuck) Swanson has worked in the design and construction industry for his entire career and has hands-on experience with LEED design features and systems. Chuck is a licensed general contractor in both the city and county of Denver, as well as in Arvada /Jefferson County. He has worked with architectural and construction firms throughout the West and Midwest and offers a comprehensive understanding of the design-build method.

Education

Chuck holds a B.A. in Architecture and Design from the University of Vermont and an MBA in Operations Management from Case Western Reserve University.

Professional Background

Starting with The Austin Company, the pioneer/leader in the delivery of design-build services, Chuck has worked for several national/international design and supply firms. He has covered multiple state territories and provided American Institute of Architects (AIA) accredited presentations across the western United States.

With special expertise in the delivery of pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB), Chuck worked several years for Butler Manufacturing (a division of Blue Scope Steel). This experience offered Chuck the opportunity to sell to nearly every strategic industry including aviation, broadcasting, data centers, food processing, defense, logistics, manufacturing/distribution, newspapers, research and development facilities and more. Currently with Taylor Kohrs, a local design-build firm, Chuck provides pre-construction, marketing and business development services for the multi-million-dollar firm.

Teaching Philosophy

Chuck’s teaching philosophy is a hands-on approach. He brings real-life experience and challenges to the Environmental Policy & Management program. Using the text as a platform, students will be involved in choosing a design role, collaborating with others, and performing a “Charette” exercise that produces a building with LEED features. Chuck guides the students through a complex process, with a clear deliverable. It’s this reward and satisfaction that Chuck enjoys seeing the students complete.
